I have been in this situation a few times. When I first got started, I bought a boxlot from an acquaintance for $45 for about 2 dozen pieces. I had no idea what some of them were really worth. I listed a silver piece on ebay (and I don't remember the signature now) but it was a collectible signed piece, and a bunch of people got into a bidding war. It ended up selling for just over $400. I gave $200 of the money to the person I bought the box from, and he was floored, and thrilled. It made an impression on him that he didn't forget, and we have since become good friends.

This happened to me in a different way. A woman's mother died, and she was selling her belongings. She had an expensive knitting machine and was asking "maybe $20 dollars?" for it. I told her she had best do a bit of research, and it was worth much, much more than that. It was eventually sold on ebay for over $400. They were thrilled. I think that was just the right thing to do.
